How photography has changed grassroots football

Grassroots football is according to FIFA a game that aims to develop the game from the local level and mainly comprises of amateur players basically, this means any part of the game that is not professional. Over the past 10-15 years, grassroots football has grown in popularity and I will be investigating what role photography has played in this surge in popularity.

In recent years grassroots football has seen a surge in popularity, a factor in this is photography. The growing popularity over the same time frame, the past 10-15 years, has allowed photographers to share their images to a wider audience, this has then meant that more people can view these images and then they may want to attend these grassroots games to increase popularity.

This question was originally posed due to ongoing growth of grassroots football in recent years following an enormous investment from the FA in 2015. This question was generated as for a number of years my main interests in photography have been in football, though this is currently at the professional level with Burton Albion it originally began at the grassroots level at St. George's Park. This will also fit in with the current work that is currently in progress as this is all centred around football photography. The methods for my research were chosen as looking at a variety of different websites such as specific photographers websites to search through their portfolios to gain a lot of vital information that is required to help develop my answers for the question originally posed. Along with this, a main method would be to look through various FA articles to try and find a correlation between the investment into grassroots football and the growth in the photography at this level.

This area is being investigating by myself due to this area being very popular and it becomes a hot topic in the photography world. This area I personally feel needs investigating due to its popularity and it allows a wide range of different people to discover a variety of new things associated with the area of grassroots football. Football photography is very important to me as my personal belief is that at every level photography is vital towards the growth of the sport and at grassroots level it is even more important as these clubs will not have the same level of exposure and this sort of photography will help the teams to grow in popularity at a much faster rate then they are currently at.

With my personal belief of photography playing a vital role in the growth of football, my aims are to go through a variety of different websites to try and prove my point. This main belief is because it is very difficult to promote a football club without using photography, especially at the grassroots level when they probably cannot promote their club through videos how a lot of the larger clubs promote themselves. With the growth of grassroots football and photography at this level I hope to capitalise on this growth to discover as much as possible about it and see what effect photography has had on grassroots football.

Around 2005 social media began a surge in popularity which still 13 years later is ongoing and this has proven a perfect place to promote photography. This surge has also led to photographers using social media to promote their imagery and this has played a vital part in the growing popularity of grassroots football photography. This has allowed a wider audience to view the images and this would then get them interested in grassroots football. Looking at all of the different ways that grassroots football has grown in recent years, it is clear that photography has played a vital part in this. Photography has also benefited from the FA's attempts to help grassroots football grow, the initiative introduced by the FA in recent years has allowed photographers to get to these games and help the grassroots game grow as well. In 2015 the FA announced they would be spending over £260 million on helping grassroots football to grow and the photographic aspect of this has also been vital in its growth.

This for myself was something that I felt should be looked into simply because I wanted to know what if anything had photography done to change grassroots football in recent years. Prior to the research, my personal belief is that photography alongside the FA's recent investment into grassroots football is the main vital aspects of the growth of grassroots football, not just since 2015 but in the last twenty years. A huge positive when looking into this topic is there is plenty of material about the FA's investment which allows me to believe there is a correlation between that and the games growth and the grassroots level, of course with this likely growth it will mean that photographers will become more involved in the game. Of course, when researching topics such as this you will come across roadblocks and this certainly happened during my research, it became difficult to find much information about how grassroots football photography had grown in the past 20 years. This is when, during the research, then several different photographers portfolios were discovered and it became clear from there that grassroots football photography has become more popular in recent years. Upon finding sufficient photographers who have been photographing football for at least 20 years, for me this was six photographers, it became evident that grassroots football photography is growing in popularity. These photographers would get little to no grassroots photographs prior to about 2004 and upon greater investment from the FA this continued to grow and has seen a peak since 2015 where it continues to vastly grow which will help the game at this level grow to almost unimaginable heights and will not only likely help the England team at a professional level but will also help all types of football photography.

A more informative way to have done this research would have been to go and see if there are any books that may contain the information required to help write this dissertation. This information could have proved vital and disproved all of the issues I had already found, it may have given me a definite date in which grassroots football began to become popular and not to allow me to use estimations on when it began by simply looking at photographers work. By not searching for photographers books to use at research, it felt as if this part was stunted and became a struggle, had this technique actually been used it may have helped towards generating a definite answer to the question originally posted at the beginning of this work. It certainly would have helped if there was a lot more in terms of research articles to go through to help develop a stronger answer to the question originally stated but with the start of this work.

The research section brought up some interesting results, mainly through different FA articles a link was discovered connecting the increase in funding with the increase in photography. The research also drew some surprising results including how well-photographed grassroots football has been for numerous years but the research also indicated that this has become more popular over the years. The research showed that despite there being a clear correlation between the investment and the growth of photography at the grassroots level, it indicated that the grassroots level of football has been well documented through photography since the 1980s. Though there wasn't a wide range of articles documenting grassroots football through the years I still managed to find sufficient research material to help write this dissertation.

The results of the research were discovered through various websites, mainly the FA website where it was discovered all the information about the investment made by the FA into grassroots football. Looking over various photographers websites made it evident that there has been an increase in the interest in photography of grassroots did correlate with the funding increase. Prior to the research stage of the project, it was believed that grassroots football photography had become more popular over the years and the investment of FA funding has helped it to grow. The hypothesis that had been drawn up of this statement so through the research I identified that my hypothesis was partially right. My hypothesis mainly indicated that grassroots football photography had increased around the time of the £260 million investment from the FA, whilst this was true photography at this level has increased on several occasions thanks to several big-money investments from the FA most notably around 2006 with investment also coming from McDonald's. All of the information for my hypothesis on grassroots football came from the research through the websites of investors and the FA websites led me to the discovery of the investment that began as far back as 2002.

Throughout the research section, it was discovered that the FA had invested heavily in grassroots football, as mentioned above. From this my research allowed me to discover a growing interest in grassroots football as such many of these smaller clubs and at junior levels want their matches photographed and documented. This has allowed photographers to go to the game and if anything it will not only help the photographers grow their portfolios, it will also help the game itself grow as the images will be distributed to a wider audience.

My main questions throughout the research were to find out not only how has photography changed grassroots football but how much has the 2015 FA investment changed the way grassroots football is photographed. What I found was that the 2015 FA investment has helped grassroots football grow and made is more accessible and this has helped the growth of photography in this area of football. My research also showed to me that the investment itself did not begin a larger scale of grassroots photography, it merely helped it to grow. The research showed that grassroots football has been documented through photography for numerous years beginning as far back as the 1980s through the work of Stuart Roy Clarke. The research did not draw up much work from the 1980s but more and more was discovered when McDonald's began investment in 2002.

With the knowledge that photographers had been capturing images of grassroots football as far back at the 1980s, I began delving deeper into the history of grassroots football to try and find a range of images taken back in the 1980s though very little from this era was discovered. Despite more research into this time era very little was also discovered from the 1990s with most photographers mainly focusing on the professional level of photography.

When I look back over all of my research I discovered that photography has changed grassroots football for the better, for me the influx in popularity of grassroots football photography has also helped this side of the sport grow as it becomes more accessible. Looking at this you could say that the influence of photography on the grassroots side of the game has helped it to grow. This led me to look at how much of an influence photography has had on the growing world of grassroots football. The research into this indicated that photography has helped grow the game in multiple ways, for instance, various newspapers such as the Mirror and the Standard captured pictures of Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn playing football at the grassroots level which he has used to help promote grassroots football.

For me, the influx of photography at the grassroots level in recent years has helped to drastically change grassroots football. The reason I feel that photography has had a vital role in the growth of grassroots football is that with the growth of the internet and social media in recent years it has allowed photographers to upload their photographs to these different sights and allow the images to be viewed by a much wider audience than ever before. This does indicate that photography has played a big role in the growth of grassroots, but photography has not been as vital as I originally indicated above.

The social media aspect of photography has also had a huge effect on the growth of grassroots football as well, with the growth of social media in the past ten years it has allowed grassroots football photography to grow as well. For instance, there are over 2 billion users on Facebook and should a photographer upload their images to the site it will seem as if there is an endless amount of people who can view these images. A photographer could upload their images and have 1500 people view there images and from this 200 could view the images and grow interested in the team that has been photographed and then they could choose to go an attend the games. Though it is highly likely that the actual numbers for this will be very different, there is still a good chance that the impact of social media has had a good effect on the continued growth of grassroots football throughout the country.

Upon discovering that photography had not had as vital an effect on grassroots football as originally thought, I continued to do more research into the sections of photography that had a large role in the growth of grassroots football. This is where it was discovered what sort of role photography had actually played in the growth of grassroots football. This turned out to be a big role, but not a vital as originally predicted, the growth of social media in recent years, as stated above, is the main factor in the growth of grassroots football as a result of photography. Through further research, it was discovered as expected grassroots football has also become more popular for the photographers to photograph as well. With the growing popularity of the fans to go to these games, it has become more popular for photographers to also attend these games and shoot images for different publications or their own personal portfolio. Though grassroots football photography is not as lucrative as Premier League, photographing at the grassroots level is a fantastic way to get your work out there and a great way to promote it as well.

When you look at all of the different arguments it is safe to say that photography has played a big role in the growth in popularity of grassroots football. As mentioned above it is also evident that the growth in social media has had an impact on photography's role in the growth of grassroots football in recent years. Prior to the research it was believed by myself that photography had a vital role in the growth of modern grassroots football, it was proven throughout the research that this was not the truth at all, but that photography had played an important role in promoting the games which would have led to growth in these matches being attended.

The methodology for this work was mixed with great results found in the online research, but the biggest error made was not doing library research which may have yielded even better results. Prior to the beginning of this work, it would have helped to go through a variety of different books to try and find as much information and possible to help give a definitive answer to my question that was posted at the start of this work.

Thanks to the potential purchase of Wembley Stadium, this may help the growth of photography at the grassroots football level, with a potential purchase price around £900 million, should the FA accept this offer and sell the stadium the plan will be to invest a large portion of this money into grassroots football, this will subsequently have a positive effect on photography at this level. It will allow grassroots football photography to grow as the game at this level also continues to grow, as the game will become more popular there will become a growing demand for photographers to capture the different games and events run at this level. This will then mean that more and more photographers could potentially get work as a result of this potential investment. When it comes to my opinion on this, should this deal go through and see all of the money invested into the game at this level, it should be brilliant for the game as a whole, but my personal feelings are that this investment into the game should be made regardless of whether the stadium is sold or not. This will help grassroots football to continue to grow and in turn will help photography at this level grow as well.

The combined literature, methodology and findings section managed to help produce roughly the result I was hoping to find when I had originally begun the research. Originally I had gone in with the idea and the hope that over the years photography had a vital role to play in the growth of modern grassroots football, though I found out this was not the result the actual result that was generated was still a positive one. Throughout all of the research, it was actually discovered that photography had simply played a big role in the growth of the sport just not as much as originally perceived. Upon this discovery, it was quite pleasing to discover that photography had played an important role in the expansion of the sport, such as was mentioned above with it helping to inform people about the sport and its continuation to grow at a rapid level. This of course, in my opinion, is a very important role for photography to play and there is a belief that had the photographers not actually been around to shoot the photographs of these matches then the sport may not have actually grown as fast as it actually has done, and one of those people is me. My personal belief is that the sport would have grown at a similar rate to what it has actually done, but that photography played a big role in helping it to grow at an even faster rate.

Looking back over everything that has been looked at, my personal opinion is that photography has changed grassroots football for the better, it has allowed it to continue its ongoing growth. Thought it was my intentions to discover how much of a roll photography had played in the growth, the results were not as originally expected with photography not playing the exact role that it was perceived that it had played. Nonetheless, the results that were actually generated were pleasing as the discovery that photography did have a big role in the growth and that it will hopefully have a big role in the future growth of the sports is very positive and shows that the link between photography and grassroots football is still very strong and will continue to grow.

The main problems that arose during this work were the actual research section, originally it became difficult to find all of the research that was needed to help write up everything that was needed. The main problem arose due to the main focus of the research being purely internet based, had the research portion also been book based then there almost certainly would have been a lot more in depth information at my disposal. The way would advance further in the future is simple, more in depth research not just computer based as originally done, personally with book research there would be a more in depth and definite answer on the original question posed at the beginning. There is without a doubt plenty that can be done to help pursue this question even further than we managed to get throughout this level of research. There is plenty out there to help take this question further and get a certain answer but my own researched failed as I have mentioned above. The results in the end were not exactly what originally predicted but they were not too different.

Now looking back at the question originally posed at the beginning of my work, how photography has changed grassroots football, I personally feel as I am in a much better position to give a definitive answer to this question, and for me photography has changed football at the grassroots level for the better not only has it assisted on the growth of the sport but it has also helped out at the youth levels, which will allow larger clubs to potentially discover these players and scout them for their clubs and this could eventually help to provide these young players with better futures for themselves and their families, it will certainly given them a much better chance then they could have had if the photography had not managed to capture them playing at a young level.

With all of this said and done, personally the results that were eventually generated were positive despite a few minor setbacks mainly in the research, of course as well it is now known how I could continue on with different research techniques to help grow this work even further and not just through my dissertation but also in my own personal work in the field of football photography to help me in the future. Thought these results were surprised and did prove a setback in my research personal belief tells me that it also came together nicely, these surprises were not as bad as originally thought and it also leaves plenty of room for potential further research into this field.
